Today is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day

Post Date:11/20/2024 2:30 pm

Today, we join communities worldwide in recognizing the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the transformative role they play in shaping our city. GIS allows us to analyze and visualize data geographically, enabling informed decisions in nearly all facets of local government. It’s a powerful tool that helps us create a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient Moorhead.

We’re proud to share that Governor Tim Walz has officially proclaimed today as GIS Day in Minnesota, emphasizing the vital impact of GIS statewide. [Read the full proclamation here.]

City of Moorhead staff rely on GIS every day to perform their jobs efficiently and effectively. From engineering and maintenance to emergency services and recreation planning, GIS helps staff analyze data, make informed decisions, and deliver exceptional services to our community.

We're excited to highlight our GIS webpages, which offer a wealth of information and resources. A standout feature is the new Summer and Winter Trails Map. This innovative tool is a one-stop shop for exploring both summer and winter recreational activities in Moorhead. Optimized for mobile devices, this tool empowers citizens to explore Moorhead’s trails and activities with ease, no matter the season!

This spring, alongside the unveiling of interpretive signs for the Red River Discovery Walk, the GIS division launched a companion Webmap and trail user survey. Accessible via QR codes, the Webmap offers audio recordings and a self-guided tour for trail users. Feedback collected from 157 respondents, including visitors from across the country, will guide future improvements to the River Corridor trail system.

Celebrate GIS Day by exploring how these tools enrich our city! Visit our GIS webpage for more resources. Together, we’re building a more connected, vibrant Moorhead.
