On October 8, 2024, shortly after 9:00 p.m., officers responded to the 1800 block of 4 Avenue South for a report of several males breaking into a vehicle. When officers arrived, one of the males fled on foot into Bennett Trailer Park, located at 1700 3 Avenue South. While searching the area, the male was found in the bathroom of an abandoned trailer scheduled for demolition. Officers tried to talk him out when he threatened to burn the trailer down and stab any officer who tried to stop him.
For over the next hour, officers tried to talk the male into coming out, but he refused. He started stabbing through the wall with a screwdriver at the officers in the next room. Less lethal uses of force were attempted but ineffective. A canister of OC gas was deployed into the bathroom, and the subject ran from the trailer and tried to flee the officers waiting at the door. K9 Kash was utilized to stop the male.
The male was identified as Jeremy Person, age 36, of Moorhead. He is being held at Clay County Correctional Facility on numerous outstanding felony warrants, as well as charges for this incident of 2nd Degree Burglary, 2nd Degree Assault, 4th Degree Assault, Obstructing the Legal Process, Fleeing a Peace Officer on Foot, and 5th Degree Arson. The Moorhead Police Department was assisted by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Moorhead Fire Department.
