City of Moorhead Receives Alex Stern Foundation Grant for Matson Field Improvements

Post Date:07/09/2024

Matson Field serves ages youth to amateur teams throughout the spring, summer and fall season. The Matson Field Improvement Project includes a grandstand, press box, new concession and bathroom areas, scoreboard, and much more. Thanks to this grant from the Alex Stern Foundation, Moorhead Parks and Recreation is grateful to continue in the process of making this dream a reality.

“Matson Field updates and renovations will provide Moorhead baseball players and fans the quintessential baseball experience! A new grandstand, press box, concession stand, dugouts, restrooms, sound system, and scoreboard plus more seating will make Matson THE destination for baseball in this Region!” Mayor Shelly Carlson.

Replacing the grandstand is the number one priority for the Park Advisory Board and included in the City of Moorhead Strategic Plan as one of the top 5 amenities in need of replacement in the city. In 2023 the City of Moorhead identified $400,000 hoping to encourage the local community to organize a capital campaign to build a stadium and make improvements to the complex. In July a group of baseball enthusiasts stepped up and have raised $1.2 M towards the $2 M goal. Fundraising is ongoing with the hope that at the conclusion of the 2024 baseball season construction could begin.

“Matson Field has seen over 50 years of life-changing memories, from heartbreak to triumph. A new grandstand will make sure our young ball players have a chance to experience these unforgettable moments with their friends and families for the next 50 years and beyond!” Jeff Miller former Moorhead Blues coach, chair of the capital campaign, and past player.

About Matson Field:

American Legion Post 21 sponsors both a Junior (Golds) and Senior (Blues) teams call this their home field. They work with 36 high school kids annually and require approximately 75 volunteers per year to host games and tournaments, run the concession stand, field maintenance, admission and announcing. Moorhead Public School District #152 also uses this field as their home playing field. On an annual basis Moorhead Youth Baseball has approximately 500 youth play with 125 volunteers from coaches, umpires and concession stand workers. Youth teams play one night a week at Matson on a rotation basis, so all youth get a chance to play on the “big field” at least once a season.
