City of Moorhead receives $50,000 grant to help fight emerald ash borer
The City of Moorhead has received a $50,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help fight the spread of emerald ash borer (EAB).
Grant funds will be used for removal of trees and purchase of replacement trees. EAB was discovered this year in several Moorhead neighborhoods. City Forestry crews have been removing smaller affected trees and treating larger trees to slow the spread of EAB. This grant will fund the removal of approximately 85 trees and nearly 220 replacement trees (some trees to be replaced have already been removed).
Trees to be removed will be identified through surveys conducted by City Forestry personnel, and homeowners will be contacted. All remaining tree stumps will be ground this fall and new trees will be planted in the spring. Replacement trees will consist of a diverse mixture of trees that will foster a more resilient future urban forest.
