Homeowners need to disconnect sump hoses from sanitary sewer system

Post Date:04/11/2023 2:51 pm

While Moorhead may have plenty of snow still on the ground, it’s melting quickly. It’s critical that Moorhead residents disconnect sump pump hoses from the sanitary sewer system. Drainage should be directed to the street, backyard or side yard (please be courteous to your neighbors when choosing where to discharge). Sump pump discharges to the sanitary sewer during this time period overload the sanitary sewer system and cause basement backups.

If temperatures are still below freezing, you can use a straight, sturdy PVC pipe instead of a sump hose as a drain. Slope the pipe away from your home so the line drains completely and put a splash block at the end to disperse discharge.

We appreciate your cooperation to ensure the capacity of our wastewater treatment system.

If you have questions about sump pump discharge, please contact the Wastewater Division at 218.299.5386.
