Clay County archivist Mark Peihl receives MoorHeart award

Post Date:02/27/2023 7:30 pm

Congratulations to Historical Archivist Mark Peihl! On February 27, the Moorhead City Council and Mayor Shelly Carlson presented him with the MoorHeart award.

Mark has been recognized for his service, deep knowledge, and respect for the history of our region. Mark encourages everyone to learn about and appreciate the history that shapes Moorhead and the surrounding area today. He inspires people to appreciate history through his passion and ability to make it meaningful and exciting. Mark’s nomination from the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County’s Board of Directors includes the following statement:

“Mark serves the citizens of Moorhead every day as he collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the history and culture of Clay County. Not only does he serve the community by archiving local history, writing researched newsletter articles and exhibits, and researching reference questions, but he gives 30-75 free public presentations in the community each year. He also helps the media who contact him about historical context for current events and is often interviewed and quoted in the media for his expertise. He is always ready to receive researchers in the archives with a smile. Mark has done this meaningful work for 36 years on behalf of the citizens of Moorhead.”

For all Mark does for Moorhead and Clay County – and especially for the way Mark has grown and nurtured an appreciation for our community’s history in such a meaningful and long-lasting way – the MoorHeart selection committee chose him to receive the MoorHeart award. Mark is a great example of the MoorHeart spirit and has made sure that others who shared that same spirit are remembered. Congratulations to Mark for his steadfast dedication and hard work over the years at the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County

The MoorHeart award is an opportunity to recognize individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate community within our City by their actions and service. A team of volunteers from city boards and commissions selects award recipients. The MoorHeart award is commemorated with a piece of art commissioned from Moorhead-based artist Karman Rheault for this purpose.

Information on nominating individuals/organizations for the MoorHeart award can be found here. Contributions large and small are worthy of nomination!
