Man with the heartfelt wave wins MoorHeart Award
Congratulations to John Cunningham! On July 11, 2022, the Moorhead City Council and Mayor Shelly Carlson presented him with the MoorHeart award.
John Cunningham is a day-maker, plain and simple. While many people driving down 8 St S in Moorhead maybe don't know his name, they do know that they love seeing and waving to him and getting an enthusiastic smile and wave right back! John is committed to putting smiles on faces and pep in the steps of community. John encourages everyone in Moorhead to be kind to those around them – even if you do not know them! John’s nomination includes the following statement:
“First, I will admit that I have never met John personally. The only background I have on him is from a Forum article written about him. But nearly every day John makes my day better. He is the man who sits in his motorized scooter on 8 St S in Moorhead by Eventide and waves to passersby. He never initiates the wave, but if someone waves or honks, he gives a big, heartfelt wave and often a smile. And every time, he brightens someone’s day. I see John almost every afternoon when I drive on 8 St S. I wait in anticipation to see if he is outside and I move to the right lane so I can be sure he sees me wave or honk. And then he waves back. And I smile. It’s that simple. No matter how bad my day, no matter what is on my mind, John makes me smile. Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone in Moorhead decided to try to make all the people around them feel happier?”
For all John has done for the community – and especially for the way his positivity sparks happiness in others – the MoorHeart selection committee chose John Cunningham to receive the July 2022 award. John is a great example of the MoorHeart attitude and spirit. Congratulations and thank you to John for showing all of us that it is the simple things in our day-to-day lives that can have the greatest impact on us.
The MoorHeart award is an opportunity to recognize individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate community within our City by their actions and service. A team of volunteers from city boards and commissions selects award recipients. The MoorHeart award is commemorated with a piece of art commissioned from Moorhead-based artist Karman Rheault especially for this purpose.
