While most properties in the City of Moorhead are in good condition, a number of basic code violations have been reported and substantiated in the past several weeks. Calls this summer have been concentrated in the campus neighborhoods, but concerns have been reported in other neighborhoods, too.
Please help the City use inspection resources wisely and keep fees low by attending to these issues before our office receives calls from neighbors. You may have assigned duties to your tenants or a property maintenance company. Please check to make sure these arrangements are being implemented to your instructions. Ultimately, the owner is responsible for maintenance and any fees and abatement charges arising from code enforcement, and the City's notification is to the owner, not tenants.
Attention to the following matters would eliminate about 80 percent of the City's property maintenance summer complaint volume!
- Mowing: Keep grass to a height of 8 inches or less and kill noxious weeds.
- Trash storage: Promptly retrieve garbage containers from the boulevard after collection, and store garbage and recycling containers in garages or to the side or rear of the home or garage.
- Trash volume: Monitor trash volume and contact Sanitation Services (218.299.5347) for special pick-ups, particularly when you have move-outs. Furniture on the boulevard is especially unsightly.
- Parking: Park vehicles on paved surface and keep dismantled vehicles in enclosed garages.
It is certainly recognized that many rental properties do an excellent job at maintenance. We appreciate your partnership in keeping our neighborhoods healthy and attractive.
