Assessing
Our Services
The City of Moorhead Assessing division provides for the equitable assessment of real and personal property as provided by state law and regulation. The City Assessor and staff are responsible for estimating the market value and determining the classification of each parcel of property, upon which property taxes are levied.
In Minnesota, property taxes provide most of the funding for local government services. Clay County collects the taxes and distributes the money between the County, cities, townships, school districts and special districts such as the watershed districts.
Each property’s share of taxes is determined according to its value, use, and property tax levies. Assessors are responsible for estimating the fair market value of real estate and setting classification for tax purposes. They have no role or involvement with the collection of taxes, budgeting or financial matters of any jurisdiction.
The City only maintains records and values on property within the city limits. For any properties outside of city limits, please contact the Clay County Assessor's Office
