Moorhead Police Department Respond to Social Media Threat Involving Local Student

Post Date:01/12/2026 1:06 pm

On Monday, January 12, the Moorhead Police Department worked closely with Moorhead Area Public Schools (MAPS) after becoming aware of a social media post suggesting a potential threat to a school. The post was taken seriously, and both MPD and MAPS immediately implemented established safety protocols to ensure the security of students and staff.

The student involved is not in school and will not return until the investigation is complete. At this time, there is no known additional threat to our schools. This situation underscores once again the strong partnership between MPD and MAPS and the shared commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment.

Chief Chris Helmick emphasized the importance of community involvement in preventing similar situations. “We encourage parents and guardians to stay engaged with their children’s online activity and conversations,” said Chief Helmick. “Open communication and awareness of social media use can prevent misunderstandings and help keep our community safe. Working together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our schools.”
