Forecast Shows Minor Flood Season for 2022

Post Date:03/22/2022 3:22 pm

At this time, it appears that the City of Moorhead should experience a relatively minor flood season. Current projections show the Red River cresting in the next week at just under 28 feet.

City crews will still be working on and around pump stations over the next few weeks to prepare City infrastructure for minor flooding. They may also be working to do any small repairs/maintenance.

Residents also have an important task: It’s time to disconnect sump pump hoses from the sanitary sewer system.

  • Residents may request a seasonal waiver to allow sump discharge into the sanitary sewer from November 1  -March 31. Because the risk of significant rain events is lower during this time, the sanitary sewer system is capable of handling this extra water. That changes during the spring and summer months.
  • As of April 1, drainage must be directed to the street, backyard or side yard (please be courteous to your neighbors when choosing where to discharge). Sump pump discharges to the sanitary sewer during this time period creates a risk of overloading the sanitary sewer system, which can lead to basement back-ups for you and your neighbors.

If you have questions about sump pump discharge, please contact the Wastewater Division at 218.299.5386.
