Moorhead Police Respond to Report of Accidental Shooting

Post Date:02/26/2021 4:21 pm

On February 26, 2021, at approximately 1:15 pm, officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of 41 Avenue South for a reported accidental shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an 18-year-old male who had received a single gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. The weapon used, a small-caliber rifle, was located on the scene. The victim was transported to Essentia Health by FM Ambulance Service.

Prior to arrival, the responsible party for the shooting left the scene. Due to the shooting's unknown nature, officers set up a perimeter, and a K-9 track was attempted. The responsible party was not located during the search.

Information of the incident was shared with staff of S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School, which is located approximately five blocks west of the incident. The school went into lockdown during the K-9 search of the area. Officers were also placed in the area of the school as a precaution.

The responsible party has still not been located; however, this is believed to be an isolated incident and there is not a threat to the public.   The incident is an active investigation, including the cause and positively identifying those involved.

The Moorhead Police Department was assisted by the Moorhead Fire Department, FM Ambulance, the Clay County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota State Patrol.
