Results of Day One of Busted by the Bus

Post Date:04/22/2019 4:14 pm

Law Enforcement from the Moorhead Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the MN State Patrol worked a four hour block focusing on distracted driving today. Officers acted as spotters as they rode on a school bus provided by the Moorhead School District. Other officers stopped drivers radioed in by the spotters who were violating MN distracted driving laws. The goal was to increase driver’s awareness around school buses and to enforcement distracted driving laws which often leads to driver’s committing school bus stop arm violations.

Officers stopped thirty-two vehicles during this enforcement day. Fourteen citations were issued to drivers for distracted driving.  For comparison, last year’s first day of Busted by the Bus officers stopped seventy-five vehicles during that enforcement day. Twenty-seven citations were issued to drivers for distracted driving. Even though we noted less traffic on 8 St today than last year, we hope the reduced numbers signifies improved safety oriented thinking and drivers are now able to ignore the temptation of using their phone while driving.

Busted on the Bus will be back again next week.

Officers in Clay County will continue to focus on distracted driving violations through April 30.
