After 8:00 pm this evening we began receiving calls from concerned citizens regarding a Snapchat post that displayed weapons and a message believed to be a threat to "MHS." The Moorhead Police Department and the Moorhead School District were in immediate communication as Patrol Officers and School Resources Officers began to look into the citizen information. A parent was able to provide further information regarding news articles from the east coast of the United States earlier this week that displayed the exact same picture. It appears the original threat targeted the Monticello High School in Virginia and law enforcement was able to take someone in custody in that matter. Several other schools that began with the letter "M" were later targeted using the same picture and message. Those investigations later concluded the image and message to be a hoax according to media and law enforcement releases.
Although we believe this is a hoax, the Moorhead Police Department and the Moorhead School District will continue to look into this matter locally. We do not believe there is a threat to anyone in Moorhead. Members of the Moorhead Police Department will provide extra patrol along with the presence of our School Resource Officers as school continues tomorrow.
